Case Study: Canadian Federation of Students-BC

Creative campaign design and flash development ignites student engagement and political participation.

The Canadian Federation of Students-BC is the British Columbia division of this national student union organization. CFS-BC speaks on behalf of undergraduate students in our province, lobbying the government for increased student aid and creating awareness of student issues in BC. In 2009, CFS-BC hired Junxion to design its “Debt Sentence” campaign, a web-based initiative aimed at alleviating the debt burden that graduating students face as a result of high tuition, decreased funding and challenging interest rates.

Junxion’s development of the Debt Sentence campaign centered around the creative design and production of a Flash-programmed online debt calculator, a fun and interactive tool that students could use to approximate the cost of their student loans, including interest over the repayment schedule. The calculation exercise culminated with an online invitation to contact government representatives to protest high tuition fees and low student funding.

Outcomes

  • Imaginative and smart Flash design
  • Cause-based marketing with a political angle
  • Strategic consultation to engage students

The project brought together Junxion’s full suite of communications and design skills: creation of a campaign mark and the selection of a color palette, icons, music and font; drafting of tone, language and content; Flash programming and the development of a customizable eNewsletter; and consultation on a social media and online engagement strategy.

The end result was a cohesive and imaginative campaign that included branded on-campus posters and flyers as well as the online debt calculator. Debt Sentence enabled the politically active CFS-BC to mobilize students across BC to demand change and support from the government.
